App State’s Pathways to Resilience Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), General Education Program, and Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Student Success (CETLSS) invite faculty from across campus to join us for our first Sustainability & Climate Literacy (SCL) Course (Re)Design Workshop. Participants in this 1-day workshop will be compensated with a stipend and will be expected to submit a product (syllabus or syllabus + AP&P proposal) by October 15th.
Goals: The primary goal of this workshop is to help faculty prepare courses for the forthcoming Sustainability & Climate Literacy (SCL) curricular component of Gen Ed 3.0, which goes into effect in the Fall of 2025. Criteria for SCL courses are listed in this document: General Education 3.0 Curricular Components. We seek workshop participants who are committed to cataloging their course in time for the Fall 2025 launch of Gen Ed 3.0, which requires that the course proposal be approved by Gen Ed Council and UAP&P at their February 2025 meeting at the latest. We also aim to inspire/foster faculty creativity around teaching about climate, expand the circle of faculty who are teaching about climate, and build community among these faculty.
Leaders: This workshop will be facilitated by QEP leaders Shea Tuberty (Biology) and Laura England (Sustainable Development), by Gen Ed leader Ted Zerucha, and course design guru Lindsay Masland (CETLSS).
Stipend: This workshop is a compensated professional development program offered to instructors who are willing to commit to the full-day workshop and complete either:
- Syllabus ($500 stipend): newly (re)designed syllabus (includes assignments, readings, etc.) focused on SCL criteria, OR
- Syllabus + AP&P proposal ($750 stipend): newly (re)designed syllabus (includes assignments, readings, etc.) focused on SCL criteria along with paperwork proposing this course for the Gen Ed SCL curricular component.
Time Commitment: Participants can expect the following in terms of commitment:
- Pre-work: participants will complete a self-guided activity with resources relevant to sustainability education and pedagogy prior to the workshop
- Wednesday, August 7, 9 am – 4:30 pm: in-person workshop program (location TBA)
- Post-work: by October 15, participants will turn in their product
Application: Please complete this workshop registration form by Friday, June 7th. We hope to include all faculty who apply (as budget and space allow). We will get back to all applicants by the following Friday, June 14th.
